Sony’s PlayStation 5 has taken over the console gaming space ever since it came out back in 2020. It was an instant hit as it outperformed any consoles that existed at the time, and arguably still continues to do so after four years. It is also a really good competitor to high-spec gaming PCs.

The PS5 recently received a refresh, which is officially called the PS5 Slim. This came with many improvements across the board for the console, including a considerable size reduction and many other features and upgrades across the board. Sony has also discontinued the previous version of the console in favor of the Slim.

These efforts from Sony make us think about what the company plans on doing for the PS5 Pro, and whether they’ll blow the minds of everyone like they did before.

Is the PS5 Pro Happening?

Sony is almost certainly working on a Pro version of the console, which is internally being referred to as “Project Trinity”. This is in line with Sony’s naming scheme, as they usually give such titles to major projects, such as calling the PS4 Pro “Neo” when it was in development.

What is the PS5 Pro Release Date?

As stated by insider Jeff Grub on the Game Mess podcast, the PS5 Pro could come out as soon as September 2024  Many reports have previously suggested that the console has been in the works at Sony since 2022, which means it could be nearing completion by now. Another source has also confirmed that the Pro console will come out before the end of 2024.

Since multiple sources have mentioned that the PS5 Pro could allegedly come out in 2024, this would be our safest bet.

What will be the PS5 specs?

Sony has not unveiled the official specs for the PS5. However, an unofficial spec list for the PS5 was leaked earlier in a credible ResetEra forum post.

The PS5 is expected to receive many major performance upgrades over the current generation of the console. Here are the biggest rumored upgrades for the PS5 Pro:

Frame Generation and DLSS

Sony is reported to be working on a frame generation technology for the PS5 in cooperation with AMD, which will be similar to Nvidia DLSS. For those who are unaware, DLSS, or “Deep Learning Super Sampling” is a technology that helps run your game smoothly by rendering an in-game scene at low resolution and scaling that up artificially. This makes the end result look extremely similar to your native resolution while allowing your game to run much faster.

AMD is already responsible for the current CPU and GPU hardware that is used inside the PS5 and PS5 Slim. AMD also has its own version of DLSS called FidelityFX Super Resolution 3, although it doesn’t perform as well as Nvidia’s.

It could make sense if AMD were to work with Sony to improve their frame-generation technology and implement it in the PS5 Pro. This could significantly boost performance, generating up to 50% more frames per second. DLSS technology could be especially useful in high-fidelity modes where frame rates are usually limited to 60.

Accelerated Ray Tracing Technology

Although Ray Tracing is extremely impressive in terms of the graphical upgrade it provides, it usually takes a high toll on a game’s FPS. This is why only a handful of games on the PS5 can reach the 60 FPS mark with Ray Tracing enabled.

It seems like the upcoming PS5 Pro aims to change this by introducing a form of RT called “Accelerated Ray Tracing,” according to Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson. Accelerated Ray Tracing would be responsible for managing the system memory more efficiently when RT is turned on.

Support For 8K Gaming

PS5 Pro’s new upgraded hardware and specs will reportedly allow it to run games at 8K. Although there aren’t many 8K TVs or monitors being used nowadays, Sony apparently wants to make sure their latest console is future-proof. There will be a special “Performance” mode that will allow you to play 8K games on the PS5.

This feature is a little doubtful, however, since not even the best graphics cards today can give a stable performance on 8K games. Moreover, it is highly unlikely that 8K monitors will become a trend in the near future. So take this rumor with a pinch of salt… or a handful.

A Powerful New GPU

It is pretty much a given that the PS5 Pro will ship with an upgraded graphics card over the current generation. However, according to the ResetEra specs post mentioned earlier, the console might allegedly have the most robust GPU to ever be included in a console, running at 14.33 TFLOPs. This new graphics card, paired with the DLSS frame-generation technology, could mean that frame rates on the new console will really impressive.

That’s The PS5 Pro

The PS5 Pro, at least how it’s being shown, looks like a really impressive upgrade over the base version. It allegedly has all the specs that you’ll need to enjoy your games without having to compromise on the FPS.

The PS5 Pro release date is being hinted to be sometime this year, likely in September. It is likely that Sony might announce the console in September, and release it a couple of months later.
